Probablement d'un peuple Mongo, mais il est difficile de définir de quelle ethnie elle provient exactement,
D'après l'Africamuseum qui en présente une similaire dans ses collections, les doubles cloches figuraient déjà sur les gravures que les colons ont réalisées dans la région congolaise au XVIe et XVIIe siècle. Ce sont dès symboles du pouvoir et elles étaient principalement utilisées pour annoncer l'arrivée d'un roi ou d'un souverain
D'autres sources parlent d'un usage plus généralisé lors des cérémonies et danses
