Exceptional LUBA Caryatid Stool
Superb seat from the first half of the 20th century, most likely the first quarter. See in the 2nd image the result of the spectroscopic test conducted by the Museo d'Arte e Scienza in Milan (estimated date: 1915).
The workshop identified by François Neyt as "The Master of the Court of the Prince of Sopola" was created in the 19th century and illustrates the Luba expansion to the east, which influenced the sculptors of this region.
Also called "Master of Warua" by Suzanne Vogel and Ezio Bassani, he was later renamed "Master of Kunda" by Bernard de Grunne (Mains de Maîtres, 2001) and subsequently "Master of Luvua" (Luba Hemba Caryatids, 2017).
However, these names primarily designate a geographical origin and a stylistic school.
For the Luba, stools are the most significant symbols of political power.
Their local name is Kipona or Kihona.
The Luba are a prominent people in eastern DRC.
Their caryatid seats, cup bearers, chiefs' staffs, arrow holders, adzes, and ancestral statues are highly renowned and among the most valued objects in African art.
