LEGA BWAMI IDIMU
MASK
Idimu mask with a very rare architecture, the eyes placed obliquely in the middle of huge orbits bleached with kaolin, the top of the head is flat, the mouth is small, with stylized and well marked teeth
It gives off a strong impression of power
We found a mask with similar orbits in Joyaux Lega, page 45
There is a Ngbaka mask that is surprisingly similar in its design in "100 peoples of Zaire" by Marc Leo Felix, page 121 n ° 2 (see bibliography) which shows quite well the porosity of the styles in the Congo tribes
The Ngbaka mask illustrated in the book has its tribe's typical scarifications on the nose.
Old mask, it has been restored
This type of mask was used as part of the cult of the Bwami, an association that organized the social structure
and ensured the stability of the Lega community.
The Lega are a Bantu forest people of Central Africa, established in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the provinces of South Kivu and Maniema.
