MASQUE KANAGA DOGON 


Les Dogon ont un grand nombre de masques 

Parmi eux, le masque Kanaga, en forme de croix de Lorraine, est utilsé dans une danse du même nom qui rejoue la création du monde en faisant tourner les points cardinaux.
Plusieurs autres interprétations existent 
Le masque représenterait un oiseau en vol, un insecte d'eau qui active Nommo, "génie de l'eau" ou encore un chacal mort, implorant le Créateur de ses quatre pattes... 

PROVENANCE:

Ce masque, ainsi que d'autres objets, a été récolté par Eliane Prévost, ethnologue française ayant séjourné chez les Dogons et écrit différents ouvrages aux Editions L'Harmattan.

Les pièces sont accompagnées d'une documentation qui atteste par des photos et descriptions de l'origine des objets (une copie sera remise à l'acquéreur)

Elle écrit au sujet de ses deux masques Kanaga:

"Le masque Kanaga ("terre, ciel, humain") est le plus important.Il représente le Dieu Amma, créateur de l'univers, et symbolise l'homme par rapport au monde.
Ce masque est maintenu par deux procédés: par un "bâton de bouche" que le porteur serre dans sa mâchoire, et par un bonnet en filet où sont fixées des cordelettes qui s'attachent autour des reins.
Tôt ou tard, l'initié doit porter le masque Kanaga et savoir danser au rythme Kanaga-boy, strictement réservé à ce masque
Ces deux masque rituels ont dansé des décennies"

The Dogon have a wide variety of masks

Among them, the Kanaga mask, in the form of a cross of Lorraine, is used in a dance of the same name which plays again the creation of the world by rotating the cardinal points
Several other interpretations exist
The mask would represent a bird in flight, an insect of water that activates Nommo, "genie of water" or a dead jackal, imploring the Creator with all four legs ...
PROVENANCE:

This mask, as well as other objects, was harvested by Eliane Prévost, a French ethnologist who stayed with the Dogons and wrote various books at the L'Harmattan Editions.

The pieces are accompanied by documentation that certifies with photos and descriptions of the origin of the objects (a copy will be given to the purchaser)

She writes about her two Kanaga masks:

"The Kanaga mask (" earth, sky, human ") is the most important. It represents the Amma God, creator of the universe, and symbolizes man in relation to the world.
This mask is maintained by two processes: by a "stick of mouth" that the wearer tightens in his jaw, and by a net cap which are fixed cords that attach around the kidneys.
Sooner or later, the initiate must wear the Kanaga mask and know how to dance to the Kanaga-boy rhythm, strictly reserved for this mask
These two ritual masks have danced for decades"
