Beautiful terracotta representing a PUNU head Okuyi Mukuyi
If we refer to the literature dedicated to African art, this object does not exist, Pounus having no tradition of terracotta statuary.
Terracotta heads are common in Nigeria (Edo, Ife, Yoruba, Jukun, Sokoto, Katsina and of course the Nok 2000 years ago), in Mali (Djenne, Bankoni and Dogon), in Ghana (Akan, Ashanti, Abron and Agni), in Burkina (Lobi, Bwa) in Togo (Ewe, Fon) and in Niger (Bura)
But not in Gabon, nor among the Punus, nor in the other tribes. This does not remove the charm of this mysterious object
