The two bells are of different sizes and volumes, which also implies different sounds.
Probably from a Mongo people, but it is difficult to define from which ethnic group it comes exactly,
According to the Africamuseum, which has a similar one in its collections, double bells already appeared on the engravings that settlers made in the Congolese region in the 16th and 17th centuries. They are symbols of power and were mainly used to announce the arrival of a king or sovereign.
Other sources speak of a more widespread use during ceremonies and dances.
