BEAUTIFUL FETISH SONGYE (Nkishi).

Beautiful fetish, very classically crafted, with a deep and dark patina

The absence of patina on the lower part of the sculpture is explained by the fact that the statues of this type were most often dressed in a long skirt in skin or textile.

Mankishi (plural of "Nkishi") are figures of power,

They serve as relays with the spirits of the dead, very present in religion...
They are used in "magical" rites serving the interest and well-being of an individual or the entire community. (Art and Power in the Savannah of Central Africa, p. 72-73).

ETHNICITY: Songye – Basongye.
ORIGIN: Democratic Republic of Congo.

(Ex Belgian Congo, ex Zaire).

MATERIAL: Wood, horn
