  LUBA

In the style of the Master of Warua
Male statues are very rare among the Luba, who sculpt female statues much more often.

" While the male gender of this statue as well as the posture of the hands tied to the abdomen relate to Hemba ancestor figures, the design of the openwork four-braid hairstyle and the iconography of the tongue emerging between the slightly parted lips are typically Luba ." (part of the description of the male Luba statue sold by Sothebys for $3,600,000 in New York on May 15, 2015, which applies perfectly well to this one as well)

The Luba are a large people of eastern DRC

Their caryatid seats, cup holders, chieftains' sticks, arrow holders, adzes and ancestor statues are very famous and among the most prized objects in African Art.
