LUBA Large caryatid stool
Beautiful Luba Shankadi seat with stylized, cubist, almost Art Deco architecture
This style is really rare, the only similar stool I spotted is lot 142, in the catalog Tribal Art, Africa, Lempertz brussels, 2007 (photo on request)
Stools are for the Luba the most important symbols of political power Their mlocal name is Kipona or Kihona
The Luba are a large people of eastern DRC. Their seats with caryatids, their carriers of cups, staffs of chiefs, arrow holders, adzes and cult statues are very famous and among the most prized objects in African Art.
