AWESOME FETISH SONGYE (Nkishi).

Large fetish, typical of the Belande subgroup, Western Songye
This smirking statue is androgynous

You can see a work with a similar headdress in Songye, Neyt, 2009 pages 38 and 39

Unfortunately, it is in poor condition, with many cracks and traces of restorations. But it remains an exceptional and powerful object

Mankishi (plural of "Nkishi") are figures of power,
They serve as relays with the spirits of the dead, very present in religion...
They are used in "magical" rites serving the interest and well-being of an individual or the entire community. (Art and Power in the Savannah of Central Africa, p. 72-73).

TYPE OF OBJECT: Fetish (Nkishi).
ETHNICITY: Songye – Basongye.
ORIGIN: Democratic Republic of Congo.
(Ex Belgian Congo, ex Zaire).
MATERIAL: Wood, horn
DIMENSIONS: Height 98 cm
CONDITION: Rather bad
