EXTREMELY RARE SHIBOARD MASK



According to Marc Leo Felix in "Maniema", this type of sculpture would represent the primordial ancestor. According to the same author, it was used by the descendants of the lega or the Shi would have borrowed this tradition from them (in "100 peoples of Zaire") This type of "mask" was also used by the Kumu.


Additional particularity, this specimen has only one head while most of the listed pieces have two. David Hamill presented in his gallery a similar piece from the Robert Dupierre collection, Paris

The Shi are a Bantu people established mainly in the far east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are neighbors of the Lega
