Superb Iginga Lega statuette
A surprisingly similar piece in aesthetics is illustrated in "Affinités Electives: Alexis Bonew and the Arts of the Congo" Sotheby's Dec 2014 auction catalogue (lot no. 3 sold for 27,500). Link on request.These statuettes, generically called Iginga, were used within the framework of the Bwami, an association which organized the social structure and ensured the stability of the Lega community.
The Lega are a Bantu forest people of Central Africa, established in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the provinces of South Kivu and Maniema.
