BEAUTIFUL BAOULE STYLE MASK

Attributed to SIKIRE KAMBIRE (1896-1963)

Thiteldhaar (Lobi Master Sculptor)

This artist is one of the few African sculptors active at the beginning of the 20th century whose reputation has survived the test of time.

Considered by some to be the best and most talented Lobi sculptor, he was trained in a renowned school known as Gbökho Gbaläthi by a great master named Okuena.
His activity is confirmed from 1914 to the early 1940s.
he fell ill around 1942 (Djeto! Fais Attention!, Daniela Bognolo, 1997, Journal des Africanistes, volume 67 fasc 1)
Thomas Keller dedicated a book to him in 2012

Mask similar to masks H25 and H26 pages 55 and 60 in Lobi Statuary (see bibliography)
The attribution of this mask to the artist is practically beyond doubt.
The works of his followers, of his workshop are very different
