Pretty Statue Bloblo Bian or Asia Usu BAOULE - BAULE
Elaborate hairstyle, delicate scarifications, the character exudes an impression of great serenity
The finesse, delicacy and refinement of Baoule sculpture is often considered unrivaled in traditional African art.
There are two types of statues
Most represent the spouses of the afterlife, "Blolo bla" which represents the spirit-wife and "Blolo Bian", the spirit-husband who respectively illustrate the feminine ideal and the masculine ideal
Physical and intellectual perfection is sought in this representation of the alter-ego of the opposite sex....
The other type of statue is the "Asia Usu", a powerful representation of a nature spirit that follows its owner like its shadow, bringing luck and serenity... The physical perfection of its representation would temper the nature of this spirit that can turn out to be hideous and savage
Susan Vogel underlines the fact that the two categories of statues are almost identical and therefore extremely difficult to identify outside of their cultural context, so I will not venture there
